'Midsummer's Noon' contemplates strength and fragility and the eternal, cyclical absolutes in the natural order of being; in it's transitory beauty the sunflower turns to face the brazen light of the solstice sun. Mixed media on watercolour paper, deep blue tones of cyanotype solution are used as a painting medium, together with vibrant, richly layered colours of acrylic ink, and haiku. This painting is from an evolving body of work titled 'Elemental' in which I employ a method of working using the four elements of nature. The physical, plein air process of creating my paintings, captures the tangible moment when the primary forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: low winter sun dancing on shingles; high solstice light bathing the meadow grasses; Sharp Sierra Nevada snowmelt; the salty sea of the Mediterranean; the heaving waters of the Atlantic. Paintings scratched and scarred by tumbling pebbles, the tidal dance, the caress of cherry blossom: tactile memories, intrinsically embedded. Ready for hanging. Float-mounted, framed & glazed (Hand finished Italian hardwood frame). Signed in pencil to the lower right corner; studio label, signed and titled to verso. 58.5 x 41.5cm / 23 x 16.3 inches (Framed 80.6 x 65.9 cm / 31.7 x 26 inches)

Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. Sophia’s works have an affinity with the ancient Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi sabi, and with resonating ripples of intuition and instinct, she illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'.
