Mushin, No-Mind calligraphy brushed in black ink on rice paper, mounted and ready to be framed. This calligraphy in the cursive style of Japanese calligraphy shows the two Japanese characters Mu and Shin. Mushin in Japanese or Wuxin in Chinese, literally means no-mind or no-thought. Mushin is the mind free of dualism, unbiased and free of afflictions. The concept of Mushin is the core principle of Zen practice and Chinese/Japanese martial arts. The two kanji are brushed in Sosho or cursive script: 無 mu - no 心 shin - mind, thought At the bottom stands the verse 'I enjoy the simple path', taken from a poem of the Chinese Tang poet Han Shan. Size of the Mushin calligraphy in cm: H 139,5 x W 35 cm x 0,2 cm. Please note that the white borders showing in the 'View in A Room' image are not on the original artwork.

My artwork comprises Zen calligraphy, watercolor and ink paintings, and abstract calligraphies. My mediums are ink, watercolors and natural pigments on rice paper, mainly Xuan paper. I wield the Chinese and Japanese brush, preferably the flexible sheep's hair brush. Many of my Zen calligraphies express the Emptiness teaching from the Heart Sutra, which has been the original inspiration for my Japanese calligraphy artwork. Other calligraphies focus on the teachings of the Diamond Sutra, Platform Sutra, or depict Zen koan, Zen poetry or single kanji. In my watercolors and ink paintings I strive for a pictorial synthesis of the subject, in the spirit of Japanese ink painting, using bold washes and vivid brush strokes.
