Two canoes are swimming in the middle of the elongated water lily pool in the Vorgebirkspark, Cologne (DE). Two young kayakers have their backs to each other, their boats – stern to stern, positioned at a small distance from each other – form a straight line in the longitudinal axis of the basin and thus to the architecture of the park. It's about to start and the kayaks will storm off, one thinks as a park visitor, and waits... and waits... in vain. The “image” with the primary colors contrasting with the green tones in the park is underlaid with a sound layer played through a loudspeaker which create a peculiar acoustic atmosphere. Iris Hoppe took the raw material for this sound component from a meditation CD for competitive athletes. Accompanied by extremely simple background music, a suggestive male voice can be heard saying sentences like: "You want to increase your athletic performance by activating your mental powers" or: "At the decisive moment you are very concentrated, dynamic, strong and successful.” A soft, whispering voice assists: “You will mobilize all your power reserves at the decisive moment and use all your abilities in a concentrated manner. You know what you can do." Given the inactivity of the female kayakers in the park basin, these slogans intended for auto-suggestion seem completely out of place. Hoppe is targeting the competitive mentality that is spreading in almost all areas of life and the addiction to increasing performance and self-optimization. Six months after the premiere of the performance for the exhibition Vorgebirgspark Skulptur Cologne in September 2018, she realized the performative installation again at the same location specifically for drone photography. She took the photo from a height of 40 meters.
