I was born and raised in New Jersey, which I left to study Aeronautical and subsequently Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University. I had a long and rewarding career as a rocket scientist. During this time I began my art study- first with Mariano Eckert, and later with Gary Shankman. As with the creative research I did independently in Aerospace, I did extensive independent study in art- working as a registered copyist at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. So I consider myself largely self-taught. All my paintings are done in the traditional style, primarily in oil, but with an occasional soft pastel creation. All are original, and no two paintings are alike.
My greatest influence in art, as it was in Aerospace, is nature. I consider myself a plein air painter in the most general sense. With landscape I paint en plein air- never from photos, never digitally aided. In painting still life, I also consider myself a plein air artist- I carefully create and assemble dynamic compositions for every still life- emphasizing lighting/color/objects size/shape/texture.
