About The Artwork

"SUMMER ON THE HILL", IS A COLLAGE THAT IS REPRESENTATIVE OF NORTH AMERICA'S HISTORICAL LANDSCAPE AND EXPLORES THE IDEA OF LAYERS OF HISTORY OR CONGLOMERATION OF STRUCTURES WITHIN A CITY OVER TIME. THE PAINTING WAS INSPIRED BY HISTORICAL IMAGES OF THE ARTIST'S CITY SKYLINE, BY THE INTEGRATION OF HISTORICAL INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS INTO THE MODERN-DAY URBAN LANDSCAPE. THE PIECE DEPICTS SUPERIMPOSED STRUCTURES AND OLD CHIMNEY STACKS WHICH CAN STILL BE SEEN IN THE OLD PART OF THE CITY AND NEAR THE WATERFRONT, REMINISCENT OF THE CITY'S INDUSTRIAL/COMMERCIAL HISTORY MID 19TH CENTURY. THE INDUSTRIALIZATION THAT TOOK PLACE WAS REVOLUTIONARY, IT MARKED THE SHIFT TO CAPITALISM, FROM A CITY OF RURAL COTTAGE AGRICULTURE TO MANUFACTURING — CHANGES THAT FUNDAMENTALLY ALTERED THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL FABRIC OF THIS AND MANY CITIES. NEW FACTORIES BEGAN TO CONCENTRATE IN KEY RAILWAY CENTRES AND USED COAL FIRED STEAM POWER, MARKED TODAY BY THE REMAINING CHIMNEY STACKS. THE ARTWORK CONVEYS THE IDEA THAT A CERTAIN ORDER CAN RESULT FROM THE CO-EXISTENCE OF DIFFERENCES, A COMPOSITIONAL BALANCE FROM A JUXTAPOSITION OF MANY DIFFERENT ELEMENTS AND CULTURES. IT IS NOT A NEGATIVE EVALUATION OF MODERN-DAY SOCIETY SO MUCH AS A CELEBRATION OF A VIBRANT CITY COMPOSED OF DRASTIC DIFFERENCES CO-EXISITING HARMONIOUSLY. THERE IS NO BETTER EXAMPLE THAN TO SIT AT THE HILL (RIVERDALE HILL IN TORONTO) ON A WARM SUMMER EVENING.

Miré Albornoz (b. 1968, Paris, Fr) is best known for her geometric abstract collage and acrylic painting. Her work focuses on pure geometric form, with its two-dimensional flatness reduced to the essential composition and on the use of colour as an integral part of expression. Her work shows a clear development over the span of three decades, from the classical to the gradual reduction of elements, a purification influenced by Cubism, modern architecture and Mid-Century Expressionism.
The artist’s practice is both additive and reductive, something that the immediacy of the collage medium facilitates. She says:
“I'm most interested in the finding, the excavation of truths when I practice a certain detachment. Unstructured elements oftentimes form part of an order, as they do in nature. So for me, an artist is not so much an inventor as a medium that discovers what already exists, that belongs to everyone. I’m fascinated by the magic beyond what we can initially see, when we extract the elements in our field of vision out of their every day context. I want to inspire people who see my work to do the same, whether a place, an object or the human form, to see beauty beyond our cultural notions. To not only understand abstraction, but to see with that newfound understanding and to be transformed by their new ways of looking at the world".
Miré’s intention is to communicate a universal visual language that is accessible to a wide audience and will transcend the barriers between art and people. The works are meant to evoke a subconscious emotional recognition in the viewer.  Miré lives and works in Toronto.
