"north-south K" Drawing

This work was inspired by a books titled "Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World" (by Tim Marshall) and "Delirious New York" (by Rem Koolhaas). This work is meant to signify the human attempt to place order on nature through the establishment of "society". The color represent naturally occurring things (water, trees, mountains, etc.), while the lines and grids represent the human attempt at placing order upon nature (streets, borders, neighborhoods, states, etc.). At a deeper level, the checkered pattern may call to question the socioeconomic structure of a society (race, the haves/have-nots, etc.). The dots represent distribution of wealth (money, etc.). I chose this media and style to express a deep truth about the world in abstract form. I enjoyed the creation of this piece (and others in this sub-collection) because it allowed me to understand more about the world and myself while creating on a smaller, more intimate scale than many of my larger works.
