Anika De Souza is a visual artist and calligrapher based in London, United Kingdom. Anika’s journey into calligraphic art began during her studies in Germany, where she investigated the timeless elegance of classic scripts such as foundational hand, italic and later copperplate writing. Rooted in tradition yet driven by innovation, her artistic expression merges the past with the present, weaving a narrative of form, rhythm, and movement. Her work explores the fluidity of gesture and language, blending calligraphic movements with abstract mark-making. Through layers of acrylic, graphite, and oil sticks, she transforms writing into a visual form, where letters stretch, distort, and blur meaning. The process-driven approach captures movement and emotion, inviting viewers to experience language as a visceral, visual journey. Influenced by such calligraphers as Brody Neuenschwander, Yves Laterme and Thomas Ingmire, and abstract artists including Cy Twombly and Brice Marden, Anika’s current body of work is about exploring form, rhythm and movement with line and space; and capturing the essence of expression through gestural writing and bold brush strokes.
