ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The piece is painted on raw canvas, with the edges left visible and the texture of the fabric visible across the piece. At the core of the painting are two overlapping blue forms, their edges seeming to bleed into the canvas fabric, blurring the distinction between the medium and the subject. Above the intertwining blues, a white, cloud-like shape hovers, adding an element of weightlessness and transcendence. Traversing the composition, a delicate graphite line and a lighter blue pastel line overlay the piece, introducing a sense of rhythm. These lines guide the viewer's gaze and provide a subtle framework for the unfolding painting. A cluster of tiny green seed-like shapes emerges, their vibrant hue acting as a focal point amidst the soothing blues and symbolising growth and renewal. These miniature forms radiate outward in a graceful dance, tapering off in various directions across the canvas.

London-based artist Flora Butler graduated with a 1st Class Degree from The University of the Arts London in 2018. She has since founded the community-focused publishing company The Mindful Editions, works with charity Chayn to facilitate a series of creative workshops for survivors of gender-based violence, and continues to develop her painting practice. Butler’s work focuses on the intricate patterns present in nature and highlights their beauty. Inspired by images of cells from different mushrooms and plants, her paintings play with shape and texture, using different mediums to create depth and form. She has had pieces exhibited in galleries across the UK, taken part in numerous group shows, and held her first solo show, Aria, in Hackney at the start of 2022.
