About The Artwork

This smaller scale painting is part of an ongoing series called 'Our Girls', which investigates and reflects on the ways that those who identify as female navigate the world. It is hoped that this series will provide space in which to reflect, but also a way to articulate the physicality of our bodies. This work uses pinks, reds and ochres because they are colours that speak of gender, but also colours that are complicated to use. They bring light and energy to the work, alongside the drawing back into the surface of the paint at the end of the process.

Originally from Sudbury, Suffolk, Cracknell’s artistry has unfolded through the finalization of an MA in Fine art (2014) and an assortment of exhibitions throughout the UK, and the USA. She now lives and works in Norwich, UK. Her abstract paintings depict a description of emotion that has no place within written or verbal language. This failure of language is conflicted by the consuming medium of oil paint, giving rise to a new voice granted by its physicality. Her inspiration is drawn from everyday life, and particulalry the natural world. The act of drawing makes an appearance within Cracknell’s practice too, forging marks against the painted canvases, while also producing individual illustrations of physical and somewhat unrecognisable beings. During her Masters study at Norwich University of the Arts (NUA), Cracknell was selected by Axisweb for their MA Star award (2014). Her works have since been featured in British Vogue and Aesthetica Magazine; her paintings can also be found in the NUA permanent collection. Having shown at The Other Art Fair London (2016, 2018, 2019) and The Other Art Fair Los Angeles (2019), Emma has gone on to collaborate with interior design specialists to complete multiple commisions of large scale work in California, and has work held in private collections from Singapoor to Los Angeles.
