Perhaps more than any time in human history, we are confronted by diversity in people. Some people rejoice in it. Others are threatened by diversity and long for people around them to be the same ... to look like them, to think like them and to believe the same things they do. What are the reasons for this? What are the reasons for valuing diversity and being able to see it as a wonderful thing? Today I have become aware of the Australian abstract artist Melinda Harper, seeing one of her works in the National Gallery of Australia. I have been motivated to return to my line painting in a new way, to try and express the concept of diversity through lines and colours. Trying to do is an achievement because I am living through a time of grief and sadness about my life. It is the colours and how they sit together that is uplifting. I hope you and other viewers may find this work throught-provoking and uplifting.

I am a colourist. My work explores colour balance, colour contrast and colour relationships. The results are strong vibrant works through to works that are minimalist, subtle and subdued. There are recurring themes of starkness, aloneness, isolation and otherness that reflect my lived experience. While much of my work involves acrylic on canvas and board, I embrace collage and digital painting, mixed media, watercolour and sculpture. I seek to engage with viewers, inviting exploration of the creative process, patterns and markings. Sometime the engagement entails humour. I would like viewers of my work to understand mediums and their meanings. In my mixed media work, I have begun to use found materials, repurposing the mundane and ordinary (for example cardboard) into works that exhibit beauty. My website is: www.trevorroweart.com
