About The Artwork

My older brother is a pool player who, in his late teens, would spend all of his time at the pool hall. I used to remember my dad always saying "he spends all of his time down at that pool hall", worried that nothing would amount to my brother's ambition. I remember walking into the pool hall one time to visit him and seeing all of the occupants of the place staring at me in a ghostly way. "Who is this new comer? Is he a pool prodigy? We've seen his kind come and go". The feeling of being watched was the experience I had when I saw the pool hall dwellers and that is how I chose to depict the figures in the piece. I made sure to incorporate the beautiful neon lights that warm the soul of any night owl who dwells in bars for long hours. It's really the dignity of the place, the lights and how they illuminate the room. Without the lights, there would be no warmth in a place like a pool hall. The two questions I asked as I composed the figures were "What is it about the figure in the fore ground that is drawing the attention of the rest of the figures" and, "What is it about the figure in the fore ground that allows him to accept attention?". These two questions drove the completion of this piece.

Born in the "the valley" of Los Angeles county, to a large Italian/Croatian family, I started painting when I was about 7. Painting at that point actually meant crayola markers, and using those crayola markers to mostly just draw and create my own levels to Super Mario World. Growing up, my Godfather Leonard, who was an artist himself, would take me to the Getty Museum and I remember never really leaving the Impressionist wing. I loved the idea of how the artist's took what was real everyday life, and made it eternal, just by the way they were laying on the brush strokes. To this day, I paint to try and meld my everyday reality with my imagination. I guess, for me, its the implementation of our imagination that gives art a quality that might make it hang around for a long time.
