About The Artwork
Illusions of the Ego is a composition lifted from the artist, Joseph Bueys in his 1974 performance installation, I Like America and America Likes Me. Bueys locked himself in a room with wild coyote for three days until he was able to befriend it. In a similar way, the mind has its own version of a wild animal. It chatters, judges, criticizes, blames and rages. If it is not attacking someone, it is giving more momentum to itself. The shepherd waits patiently, watching his thoughts carefully, without labeling them or trying to change them. Over time, the illusions dissolve, and the mind is a tamed and quiet place. This is the methodology I am trying to convey with this painting. As someone who has tremendous difficulty being the shepherd at every moment, I often find myself identifying more closely with the wolf.
