NININ #1 - (Neither Is Nor Is Not) Painting

Disclaimer: The NININ series of paintings are as much painting and art as they are a spiritual practice, meditation, discipline and philosophy. As I move on in life and evolve spiritually the paintings meaning deepens. It is hard for me to put into words what I am trying to express, the intuition I have with these paintings. To me they are a pointer towards Being, truth, the unity of all, the One, all pervading existence. Neither the photograph nor the description below do justice to the artwork. Photograph for NININ #1 will be updated in June 2022. 'Neither is nor is not' is a series of paintings by Philipp Hesser (1980). The formula is simple: 3 canvases, 60x80cm each, painted black, black, dark red/purple from left to right. Repeatedly. Why? you my ask.. I tried to paint emptiness I have asked my self that question several times, whether this project is just a waste of canvas and paint or if it is worthwhile to continue painting these rather dark paintings. I am continuing.. Neither is nor is it not a a painting. Art and painting to me are not about skill or beauty, they are about expression. What interests me is how paintings that are the same at first sight trigger very different emotions. To me the painting comes to life in the viewer, it is her/his imagination that gives it meaning. To me this corresponds to reality, each of us have our unique way of seeing the world around us. Although our perception and consciousness function in a similar way, although we are all humans of the same kind, we are individuals, each of us is unique. I know these paintings will not appeal to many people. And even less will want to hang one in their living room. Therefore I am immensley thankful to those that show an interest and support me on this mission of mine...
