Inspiration for "Painting Summer Peonies" began with the experience of visiting a friend for lunch and receiving some summer peonies from her garden, as a gift, before I went home. In this painting I hoped to capture and preserve aspects of my time visiting my friend and enjoying a summer afternoon and the beauty of friendship. When I got home, I placed the small bouquet on my kitchen table and loved how the light came through the window, lighting the peonies in a captivating way. Noticing the beauty and gentleness of the bouquet I was struck by the light and how it enhanced the colors and presence of the arrangement. I love simplifying what I paint and uncovering the shapes of things as well as their color. I use beautiful lines to capture what's almost a silhouette of the subject while not eliminating all the detail. Then, taking my brushes I start to apply the color in an expressive way. Sometimes with visible brushwork, sometimes mixing enhanced colors, but always aiming to create a sense of connection through the composition and palette. Expressing a feeling around my experience with the physical subject is integral to my artwork. There is always some backstory that brought me to the moment of facing the canvas with the particular subject. I never know if the subject chose me more than I chose the subject, but either way, I hope the painting offers something visceral for the viewer too.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
