About The Artwork

Remnants of Hope - Part II This is part of a series of paintings inspired by an ancient wishing tree, sometimes known as a Clootie Tree, I came across in Cornwall, UK I am fascinated by the rituals and traditions of trying fragments of fabric and other items which carry personal meaning, on to a designated tree, often found near an old wishing well. I am particularly interested in the play between the reverence and quietness of the setting with the 'busyness' of the random colours and textures of the wishes... A wishing tree is an individual tree, which is used as an object of wishes and offerings. Such trees are identified as possessing a special religious or spiritual value. These 'wishes' and offerings are left in hope of having a wish granted, or a prayer answered, from a nature spirit, saint or goddess, depending on the local tradition.

Biography Lara Cobden is a figurative painter living and working in Norfolk. Following a degree in Painting at the University of Brighton, Lara spent 11 years in Ireland before relocating to East Anglia. Her work has been exhibited in the UK and internationally. 'Focusing on memory and sense of place, the paintings are a subjective and individual response to the natural world around me, seeing the fantastical and magical in nature. I hope there is both a stillness and fluidity in my work; in the ordinary - a sense of reverence. Paintings evolved from remembered landscapes and casual snapshots, shimmer and shift in and out of focus, both misty and precise. This balance is also contained within the composition of a painting; presence and absence. The thread pulling this work together is about 'coming home', belonging; or conversely a sense of ' unbelonging'. '
