About The Artwork
This oil painting was made to pose questions about the nature of our outlook on life. To us outsiders, with our brand new jeans and 30 year mortgages, his lifestyle looks pitiable. Yet the old beaten man in his tattered clothes laughs. His cap rises delicately off of his head. He looks like a tramp, but at the same time, is there something more to him? Is he somehow enlightened? Is he a holder of some secret? There were many separate elements that contributed to the concept for this piece, but one of the primary inspirations is the beautiful novel "Siddhartha" but Hermann Hesse, which gave me my first glimpse into the ascetic mode of thought.
