About The Artwork
This piece is entitled "Time is a machine". This small painting was made while I was sitting in a cafe terrace one afternoon in the year 2012. I though of time symbolized as an old man looking the present and future with a bit of pesimism. I pictured this lonely old man as a Colossus in front of a computer screen in his house, but the screen is not visible in the painting, we the spectators are the screen, looking from outside to the inside. This old man is in the middle of an street which is at the same time his bed. His intimacy has being invaded by the outside world, unknown people are running and walking there, maybe they can symbolize all the people that we see or follow daily in the internet which we pretend to know even that we really don´t know who they are. The street and his surrounding is the methapor of how images from the outside world become part of our intimacy at to the point of believing that we are really there, that has been one of the major advances of digital media: "Makes us believe that we are there, somewhere" breaking almost the rules of time and space. He has the power to decided from his bed any action by pressing any key in the keyboard. This action is creating chaos around him. We don´t know what´s going to occur after. All our actions, good or bad, has consecuences and I believe we all know that. Nowadays, this consecuences can have an inmediate effect in other people lives by just pressing one key. Digital technology is a double face coin, it can be positive or negative in our lifes depending how we use it and with what purpose. Looking back in time, I think that 2012 was the year that the internet communication and digitalization was becoming a major role in our private lives, maybe that´s why this painting came to life as an effect of that time. Nowadays, is very normal to see people looking their phones constantly, we inevitably became the machine. That´s why time is a machine!

I was born in Puerto Rico and I currently live in Hamburg, Germany. I studied Art at the University of Puerto Rico and the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. My work is often intertwined with feelings of ambivalence and metaphorical confrontations. I try to challenge our visual perceptions and our daily routine with a playful irony based on symbols and images, and how other poetic forms of visualization can be reached through them. My pieces are a kind of poetic transducer of modern collective isolation, existential questioning and the displacement of the individual in spaces and situations where uncertainty is an intrinsic part of the work itself. Themes such as the ambiguity of life, poetry, dreams, time, philosophy, literature and man's struggle to survive in his environment are very essential elements of my work. In my case, a painting can take many forms and meanings, while I am in the process of painting, the work slowly metamorphoses and evolves, until it reaches the point of being "finished". In most of my pieces, the result of each work is completely different from what I had in mind at the beginning and that is what I like about painting and drawing, spontaneity, fluidity, not forcing anything but being authentic. In the end, I firmly believe that the work should speak for itself from the moment it leaves the studio. Like a scare in the dark that seizes the viewer and immobilizes him, the work has to create a profound sensation. That is what I try in some way, consciously or unconsciously, to achieve with each of my pieces, to make the viewer think, to put them in a situation of analysis and reaction.
