Brett Kaufman, '10 Randy Shilts' 'The Mayor of Castro Street: The Mayor and Castro Street' and Rob Epstein's Accademy Award winning documentary 'The Times of Harvey Milk' both made a huge impact on me as a new arrival to San Francisco in the late 80's. They both inspired me to create a portrait of Harvey around that time, which ended up being the poster and playbill for the SF Opera's production of 'Harvey Milk the Opera'. In 2010, I decided to take that original collage, and update it, to more accurately represent what Harvey means to me; namely, all the lives he has touched through his courage and activism. The image was the only one I completed in 2010, it took me all year to do it. The strips of newspaper which make up the hair, were created by bending and photographing the headlines of his day. Among the countless people represented, the teeth are made up of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The cheek on the right is made up of people directly associated with Harvey, including Daniel Nicoletta, the original photographer of this image, whom Harvey knew and loved. The upper corners of the image are screened back photo's of the place Harvey came to call his home and which became the epicenter of the gay rights movement in the late 70's: a small section of San Francisco lovingly known as 'The Castro'. The street map of the area makes up the collar. Due in no small part, because of the efforts Harvey Milk made at a time when the world was closed to gay civil rights; our current world view has become so much more open and accepting, Thank you Harvey, thanks for giving us 'Hope'. ----------------------------------- S. Brett Kaufman is a San Francisco-based artist whose work is inspired by the numerous biographies he has read over the years. His ongoing series of surrealist portraits has been twenty years in the making. Brett's work is created using one of, or a combination of the following: photography, collage, and assemblage. He often thinks of his work as a puzzle that is put together piece by piece, similar to a mosaic. Each image has a separate story to tell; and likewise, a separate technique involved. Kaufman's work has been presented in museums, galleries, and alternative spaces as varied as San Francisco City Hall, SF Camerawork, Sacramento's Crocker Art Museum, New York's Monique Goldstrom Gallery, and the Rumbach-Synagogue in Budapest, Hungary. In '96 “Ode to Harvey Milk” became the poster and playbill for the San Francisco Opera’s production of “Harvey Milk The Opera”. Brett's imagery, has graced the covers of The SF Bay Guardian, Frontiers Magazine, and over 30 issues of the San Francisco Sentinel. His art has been enthusiastically received over the years, and sits in many prestigious collections, including the Rene de Rosa Foundation in Napa Valley, the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, and sold through the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C.
