Petersen investigates the materials themselves in his process, mixing mineral compounds, oils, plant matter, and other pigments that are foraged from nature. These materials interact with each other on a small scale; Petersen guides this process with the introduction of factors such as light, heat, magnetization, and wind. After time and environment have done their work to transform Petersen’s amalgams, photography is utilized to capture these impermanent and unstable moments. Petersen engages traditional photography techniques like solarization, cross processing, and split toning to complete his compositions.
