About The Artwork

About the series… These images are from an ongoing project of mine called Negativityness- it started as my response to the political climate the last few years- everything seems to be about negativity, about division, about what is truth (and what is inarguably false, yet touted as truth). It is about how the surface of things can be 180 degrees opposite from what is underneath. It is about falsehoods and unseen influence. It is about discordance, about disorientation, about a world turned upside down and inside out. What was familiar and perhaps mundane has now taken on a sense of surrealism and unfamiliarity. It has since grown to encompass the consequences (and possible fantastical outcomes) of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the effects of ever increasing and cataclysmic climate change. What would happen if nature took hold, if vegetation overgrew the familiar and transformed it into something altogether different and foreign looking, but also strangely beautiful? About the print… This is a dye-sublimation (“metal”) print, in which the color dyes are vaporized and fused into the metal surface under heat and extreme pressure. As a result, the image is extra vivid, more archival and more durable, than traditional color prints (although no current color photographic process is 100% archival). It also does not need to be framed, or placed behind glass, as it has a metal backing frame, that allows it to easily be hung, and “float” away from the wall. The piece has wire on the back to allow for easy installation. If for some reason you are thinking of an alternate method of displaying the image, and you prefer not to have the backing installed, please let me know and I can produce the image with no backing. Please allow at least 3 weeks production for prints to ship. Each piece in the limited edition is signed, numbered, and comes with a certificate of authenticity from the artist. Note: all finished print sizes are approximate.

Born and raised in NYC, Robert A. Ripps personal work explores the interaction and intersection of nature and the man-made world, both visually, as well as technically. Since graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with BFA in photography, he has worked as a commercial photographer, while at the same time, working on diverse personal projects. His book, Urban Trees - Photographs 2009–2014, tries to answer the question, How does a tree grow in Brooklyn, or in other cities, where people and concrete are constantly encroaching? In the monograph, he treats the trees as the tenacious urbanites they are, fighting a never-ending struggle to survive in our modern, man-made world. Robert has won numerous awards, including inclusion in Lürzer's Archive Edition 6- 200best digital artists, American Photography 36 and 39 annuals, multiple honors from Photo District News (PDN), as well as being a part of the Polaroid collection.
