Chebu-Rasha in Gloves Print - Limited Edition of 10

Unique print in one of K-Liee's most famous, and ever evolving, series, Chebu-Rasha. This is a print of her art, originally on porcelain slab, from her Chinese residency in the world renowned Taoxichuan Art Centre, in Jingdezhen, China, famous for the porcelain being made there for more than 1,000 years. Cheburashka, a Soviet animated character crafted by Eduard Uspensky in 1966, has effortlessly evolved into one of the most iconic symbols of Russia worldwide. Its name, a whimsical creation of Uspensky inspired by the slang term "cheburakhnutsya" meaning "to fall" or "to stumble," adds a playful touch to the endearing creature's persona. Svetlana K-Liee, in her artistic exploration, cleverly intertwines the character's name with a nod to Russia by spelling the second part in English as "Rasha," harmonizing with the country's moniker. This deliberate choice echoes throughout her project, forging a connection between Cheburashka and the essence of Russia. The character, portrayed as an innocent, gender-neutral being with endearing fluffy ears, emerges as the quintessential Russian hero. In her series "Clouds or Chebu-Rasha”, K-Liee draws inspiration from the Torii transformation gate in Japanese culture. Traditionally marking the entrance to Shinto shrines where gods reside, the gate symbolises a transition from the tangible, material world, with its inherent boundaries, to the pure, boundless realm. This concept seamlessly aligns with the portrayal of Cheburashka as an innocent and pure creature, creating a captivating fusion that transcends cultural and symbolic boundaries.
