About The Artwork

A typical Hulings subject, the flower market, gets a lively treatment in this slice of life from the capital of Morelos, Mexico. His daughter Elizabeth Hulings says: "A complicated scene like [this one] would require 4-6 weeks of work in the studio to complete, and that's after making the trip to Mexico, scouring the market for compositional elements, and planning the picture." The younger woman with long hair wearing grey looks cool and contemporary, and the lady in the blue hat looking through her change purse with her dog waiting patiently on the bench is a more classic touch. The flowers are a vivid color palette, showing the after-the-rain saturation that Hulings often preferred for his flowers. Printed on paper in limited editions, signed and numbered.

Clark Hulings (1922-2011) was born in Florida and raised in New Jersey. Over his lifetime, he resided in New York, Louisiana, and throughout Europe before settling in Santa Fe in 1972. Clark’s ability to see beauty in daily human gestures and activities won him the appellation “master” on numerous occasions. His celebration of textures as expressed through light, shadow, and atmosphere “describes the air itself,” according to the Christian Science Monitor. His range of subject matter was astonishing, “No one does as many things as well,” proclaimed Southwest Art. His modesty in the face of such acclaim was legendary. Throughout his career he maintained a personal profile far lower than his national reputation.
