Portrait of a Woman with a Floral Bonnet - Limited Edition of 1 Print

This piece represents a series of mixed media woodcuts, which were originally done as studies for my series of women poets in oil. By doing drawings and woodcut studies, I was able to experiment with my subject's expression, and to explore contrast, value, texture, and line. Those that succeeded were then done in oil. I revisited these works, which, in time, became a body of work in their own right. Many of these portraits do not have the name of the subject in the title. I wanted to let go of capturing a likeness, which allowed me to push the boundaries of my materials and techniques. These woodcuts, printed on Stonehenge or Coventry paper, have been cut out, mounted on a cream vellum paper, and signed on the image. After being hand pulled, I hand ink, hand paint, and work the original surface of the woodcut in various ways, making each image entirely unique, and one of a kind.
