About The Artwork

With its subtle color values and it's meditative subject, The Lonely Man is a unique Hulings piece. Your eye is invited to move in a sweeping circle from the upper left corner, to the man, to the tree. This painting has examples of multiple techniques and influences, from the Jackson Pollock splatter of the spiked tree branches, to Thomas Moran in the smooth mists over the water and mountains. We take in the golden evening light and the man's small place in a large landscape. Sicily, the island to the west of the "boot" of Italy, is an ancient place with settlements pre-dating Greece and still boasting a large, active volcano; both reminders of the continuation of the dailyness of life in the face of risk and change. Printed on paper in limited editions, signed and numbered.

Clark Hulings (1922-2011) was born in Florida and raised in New Jersey. Over his lifetime, he resided in New York, Louisiana, and throughout Europe before settling in Santa Fe in 1972. Clark’s ability to see beauty in daily human gestures and activities won him the appellation “master” on numerous occasions. His celebration of textures as expressed through light, shadow, and atmosphere “describes the air itself,” according to the Christian Science Monitor. His range of subject matter was astonishing, “No one does as many things as well,” proclaimed Southwest Art. His modesty in the face of such acclaim was legendary. Throughout his career he maintained a personal profile far lower than his national reputation.
