Black lacquered cobblestone, felt pads, 10x10x10 cm, 2,2kg This cube is a painted readymade (found object), a stone from an european capital city, lacquered in black, and a tribute to Marcel Duchamp. But contrary to Duchamp's Fountain (1917), designated as art one hundred years before, Ben Spider, with the Cube Series, refutes the idea of a self-proclaimed art, qualifying this work as "only real estate". That's why the Cubes are for sale at the property price from where it was found. It asks about art identity, criticizes speculation and explores the zero degree in sculpture. "Beneath the pavement, the beach" was a slogan dating from the 1968 student riots and referring both to the paving stones thrown at the police and to the ideal of a more fulfilling life beyond the confines of drab conformity.
