Eagle and hiding rabbit Sculpture

I’ve been an artist my entire life, its what I was born to do. All my sculptures are important to me and each one is unique. My works are intended to enrich our everyday life. I make them with the intent that they be enjoyed for a lifetime and more, that they have a timeless quality and hold relevance. The natural kingdom after all has been depicted since the caveman days. Animals will always be a subject that holds significance and meaning for every generation. In today's society with all its technology and distractions, slowing down and appreciating creation seems more vital for the soul than ever. Appreciating nature encourages a rested mental state, a clearer mind, and emotional health. That's why I choose natural materials, and why I choose the subjects I’ve focused on. I carve animals because of what each can represent. I wish to express the character of these creatures. All animals evoke a different response from us. They can even make us feel certain ways. Consider the eagle. It’s powerful, fierce, serious, and it reminds us of those qualities in individuals. In this way, animals as my subject serve a greater purpose, holding up a mirror to ourselves. Each type of wood has its own character, grain and color. I love working with the wood to finish it in a way that will let the material’s attributes stand on there own and shine. Each individual log has its own challenges; the bends, branches, crevices, splits, things that dictate the placement of the forms. I enjoy figuring out how to fit my subjects in a confined space then setting them free, finding the most advantageous arrangement so that the finished sculpture can occupy the greatest volume of the original log but not seem confined to specific parameters. The composition should feel natural and be attractive from every angle. This eagle sculpture stands 5’2” tall, carved in red oak using chainsaws and other power tools, and is finished with hand tools. I have payed great attention to the details, and endeavored to create a truly unique sculpture. I have sought for an aesthetic balance with charm and realism.
