About The Artwork

This piece is inspired by the Etruscan funerary sculptures of couples half lying at dinner, engrossed in deep conversation. I emphasise the bond between man and woman by the all-round oval shape formed by their intertwined arms, and the inclination of their heads. They are not looking at each other, but out into the world, sharing a similar view. Their arms round their backs offer protection; their locked hands closeness. The empty spaces formed between their bodies and heads remind me of the importance of space and distance in a relationship to allow for intermittent closeness between human beings.

Beauty holds contradictions, tensions, and ambivalence, it is a balance kept despite conflict. » Beatrice Hoffman is a German sculptor based near Oxford in the United Kingdom whose works have been extensively exhibited on a national level. Her art explores the universal themes relating to mythology, psychology, and spirituality, as well as mental states, relationships, human identity, maternal love, and solitude.
