ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I had found this wooden carving in a charity shop and always wanted to make a fetish or voodoo object. The more nails the better and when I realised that two hippo figures would fit perfectly on to the figure, it all seemed to work together. The title came after the making and I hope allows some humour and optimism into the subject area of human/animal relations. I was inspired by the many images I have seen of dusty figures impaled with nails and spikes, the hippos also look quite dopey, which adds to the absurdity. All materials are re use and second hand, nails from my log burning stove, figures from charity shops.

I make work about the division, opposition and collusion between animals and humans. Oil painting, drawing, assemblage, collage and the re-use of materials and objects are central to my work. Painting selected for the 171 RWA Open exhibition 2024, I won the Ovalhouse prize at Chelsea College of Art, and Gloucester University prize at the Open West.
