About the Sculpture: This is another of my Prophets which I so love to carve. I love the hair, the beard and the colour of the wood. You will notice all the highest parts of the sculpture like the eyebrows and the hair and beard has white in it. This is the sap wood of the tree. If you were to cut a slice of wood the outside near the bark will be a lighter colour than the rest of the wood. This is the sap wood. Every tree trunk has it's own character and even thou I love carving these prophets not one of them is ever the same. I name them after the prophets of the Bible because you can see the power of God in their eyes. About the Wood: It is carved from Lead wood (Ebony) which is a very hard wood indigenous to South Africa. A Lead Wood tree can grow for a 1000 years and then can stand dead in the ground for another 1000 years. If a dead lead wood tree were to be buried underneath the ground for the same period of time it would turn into fossil and is the equivalent of rock. As a wood carver I know that I can not carve a green or wet tree. It will crack and split into pieces. I used to go and find the old dead trees in the mountain and then I would still have to let them dry in the sun for a few years before I could carve them. Now a days you can not drive into the mountain any more and finding reasonable sized dead trees is very hard because people cut them down for fire wood. Hard indigenous woods are becoming rare, especially the big ones. I have accumulated wet trees over the years, which I keep and I turn them in the sun every year, this particular piece of wood I have sun dried for 30 years. The wood itself is very valuable. You might think the price is high but actually you are only paying for the worth of the wood not my time or skills.
