An Jiangchuan is a Chinese contemporary sculptor and installation artist whose practice explores the relationship between Eastern philosophy, architecture, nature, and human spiritual space. Deeply influenced by the I Ching philosophy, Han dynasty stone carvings, and the aesthetics of the Wei and Jin dynasties, his works combine traditional Chinese cultural symbols with contemporary installation language. Through sculpture, spatial intervention, wood, brass, ceramic, and mixed-media installations, he investigates themes of water culture, memory, ritual, and the disappearing lifestyles of traditional Jiangnan water towns. Living and working in Hangzhou, a historic city shaped by classical Chinese aesthetics, An has spent years researching traditional Chinese spatial philosophy and vernacular architecture. His recent practice focuses on the relationship between water, architecture, and human habitation across Eastern and Western cultural contexts. In addition to his independent artistic practice, An has participated in numerous public art commissions, urban cultural projects, sculpture competitions, and interdisciplinary design collaborations throughout China.
