Heejoon Lee

In the process of making work, I start with collecting the images of unusual, alien and exotic. I am interested in the context of foreign; how the concept of foreign can be defined. Thus, my interest expands to the question of where dose the border of usual and unusual stands. In other words, I am questioning what is the state of an alien and what it means to be abnormal. Ultimately, through my practice, I am trying to define the emotional distance between the usual and the unusual, familiar and unfamiliar, and ordinary and extraordinary.

Grouping is an important element in my practice. From the mass collection of collected images, I categorize the images from some of the rules that I have made. The way I group them can be varied from by the colors, shapes or even by the ecological roots. The process of grouping sometimes brings things that are not thought to be related. However, their unease coexistence triggers a chain of narrative in the work.
