Alex Hubbell cherishes the Art of Simplicity. Originally from the United States, she trained as a Zen painter before beginning to use watercolor and ink. Much of her work contains a single pigment: Indigo.

True to the Zen ethos of transparency, Alex prefers using large brushes and bold brushstrokes to define her subject, wishing to capture the essence of nature through the purest of gestures. Although she loves all animals, Alex often paints creatures who fly. To her, flight is a symbol of freedom and hope. Says the artist, “To me there is something magic in the moment of flight: What was once tethered to the ground is now free to fly.”

Alex earned her MFA from the Royal College of Art, London, where she used watercolor paintings to develop Art Therapy methods. Her work has been featured in the Victoria & Albert Museum, sold in Selfridges London and selected for the HAY International Talent Award and the MUJI 04 Award. Her research into the art of dreams was nominated for a Helen Hamlyn Design Award.
