Ayobola Kekere-Ekun (Lagos, Nigeria) is an artist who mainly works with mixed media. By using an ever-growing archive of objects to create autonomous artworks, Ayobola tries to approach subjects examining gender, identity and the human condition in a multi-layered way; creating work through labour intensive processes which can be seen as a personal exorcism ritual.
Her mixed media artworks directly respond to the surrounding environment and uses everyday experiences from the artist as a starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. Her works are notable for their perfect finish and tactile nature. This is of great importance and bears witness to an inclination towards visually stimulating work. With a conceptual approach, she considers making art a skill which is executed using clear formal rules and which should always refer to social reality.
Ayobola Kekere-Ekun currently lives and works in Lagos.
