Josh Powell is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha's BFA program. Powell's paintings consist of nostalgic, sometimes vintage images mixed in a contemporary manner to show reoccurring connections or themes in history. He creates large, mixed media artwork using the techniques of: juxtaposition ofunrelated objects, dislocation of objects and transformation of the familiar intothe unusual and disturbing. Crude, but well constructed, his highly colorful and powerful works hold a mirror to current events and our ignorance to learn from past missteps.
He is influenced by the cycling of history, folklore, predictions, and or coincidences, pop-culture and mass media.
The artist:
I make mixed media art in order to escape the boundaries ofthe canvas and question the ideologies of what is a "painting", and the samefor my 3-D work. I use ordinarymaterials such as: pens, markers, paper, gel mediums, spray paint, acrylic paint, digitalimages, found adhesives and found objects. The materials I choose to use are simply based off of their need andpurpose for the scenario/meaning of the piece.
Enjoy.
