Ralf Martens-Andernach is a German abstract painter. He lives and works in Bonn, New York and Los Angeles. The large format abstract and multi-layered paintings want to stimulate the senses and thoughts of the viewer to intensify reality. Whether this is accomplished, depends on how intensive his intuition and perception of the environment can be transformed on to canvas. Below the white-monochrome or colored surfaces are multiple layers of paint yielding figuration and abstraction, significance and banality. Featuring bright colors and detailed, multilayered compositions he uses a palette knife, a squeegee, and a knife to shape these paintings built up in several layers of oil paint, often made use of chance in the creation of his works—resulting in detailed and extremely complex compositions. Ultimate goal is to discover and paraphrase the hidden and unknown below the surface.
