My work explores the spirit of nature through the medium of acrylic, spray paint and collage. I create landscapes with loose, abstract narratives from vivid memories of the natural world, and the intense emotions I felt there as a child. In woodlands that are vibrant and alive, and seas bursting with colour and energy. Through my childhood these moments were unexplainable but I now know this phenomenon to be described as ‘awe’ or ‘the sublime’. “The sublime is often described as the strongest feeling the mind is capable of feeling; something that is experienced outside of our conscious mind and is rooted in our relationship to the world. The sublime encourages us to feel ourselves in relationship to something larger than us.” I use vivid brushstrokes and dream-like imagery to mimic transcendental moments experienced in nature. Emotions are explored through uplifting hues and contrasting tones to reflect a darkness; a nod to the unknown. By tapping into memories and emotions associated with particular places, my purpose is to renew our bond with nature and remind us of a sense of oneness with the broader universe.
