This painting makes me think of everything I like about painting: the contrasts between dark and light, the reflected shadows that the eye barely sees but the brain registers. I enjoy value studies because, like a black and white photo, there is no hiding behind color.

I was raised in Anston, a small town outside Green Bay, Wisconsin. Growing up surrounded by farms birthed a love of everything creative and colorful. Speckled cows on a green field in front of a red and white barn; running barefoot through the pea fields with my sisters listening to the pods pop; spinning on a rope swing; creating games of pie tag in the crunchy fall leaves; all memories I hold like a snowflake, fragile and quick to pass. As an adult, like anyone else, I wear many hats in life. As an attorney, my life is filled with black and white and many variants of gray. As a teacher, my life is filled with the soft yellow glow of knowledge. But as an artist, my life gets to be filled with color. At various times I quieted the artist in me, choosing obligation over freedom and I felt my soul starving. My choice to nurture that art girl has been a wonderful creative journey.
