I was born in Boston, Massachusetts and moved to Los Angeles after college. I received a B.F.A. in Painting at Rhode Island School of Design. I am married and have 2 children in college. I have always been interested in the distance between people, the separateness that can exist in relationships. Physical and emotional space between people can be complicated; people can inhabit very different realities even when they share the same space. To explore this, I paint narratives where the figures seem to be alone in their own worlds or unaware of each other’s presence. Sometimes I will use a diptych or a triptych to make the separation more literal. The images I am drawn to are ones that spark memories from my past; self-conscious, lonely, and stoic moments from childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Subtle body language reveals hidden tension. These images are inspired by personal and family photographs, newspaper, or magazine images that conjure up emotions and situations that I have experienced, but believe to be universal.
