This is one of three paintings created for the opening exhibition at the Marylebone Theatre in London 30/9/22. Over a period of 4 months I spent time in the theatre, sketching, watching rehearsals and spoke with actors and staff about the spirit of creativity. I translated this into these paintings....

Anniek Verholt is an artist from the Netherlands, currently based in Brighton and Athens. Her abstract works, rich in layers, texture, and movement, reflect her deep interest in psychology and consciousness, exploring the complexities of the human experience. Anniek’s artistic journey began with a BA in Art Therapy from the University of Applied Sciences in Leiden (1996–2000), where she delved into the therapeutic use and impact of art and the creative process. This foundation continues to inform her practice, as she facilitates therapeutic arts projects alongside her own artistic pursuits. Notably, she led a therapeutic arts programme in a London male prison from 2017 to 2024. Her fascination with colour and light led her to the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, where she earned an MA in Glass from the University of Sunderland in 2004. Specialising in kiln-formed and sand-cast glass techniques, Anniek continued to explore how bespoke and public art could promote wellbeing. During this time, her paintings remained a vital aspect of her process, often exhibited alongside her glass sculptures. From 2009 to 2022, Anniek taught abstract art at the Hampstead School of Art in London. Today, she continues to inspire students through her popular weekly online classes, which attract participants from around the globe. Since 2024, Anniek has been collaborating with cognitive neuroscientist Professor Anil Seth and his team at the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science. Her paintings serve as an artistic response to their research, experiments, and philosophical conversations about perception and the nature of consciousness. Anniek exhibits her work internationally and creates bespoke artworks for clients on commission and location. Her practice is defined by a harmonious blend of artistic exploration, scientific inquiry, and a commitment to using art as a tool for connection and wellbeing.
