Christel Haag

I am an abstract painter living and working in Munich, Germany. Mainly self-taught, I create colorful, gestural paintings that emerge from an intuitive process rather than a fixed plan. Layer by layer I build energetic compositions that reflect inner landscapes, memories and emotional states.
Working mostly with acrylics a canvas and paper, my art is characterized by vibrant color, dynamic brushwork and a sense of depth and movement. Instead of depicting literal scenes, my paintings invite viewers to slow down, feel and interpret - discovering their own associations within the dialogue of color, texture and line. My works have been exhibited internationally and are held in private collections in Europe, the US and Asia.

I am a self-taught artist but also took classes by leading and well-known artists at prestigious art institutions. The evolution of my paintings does not follow a predetermined concept. Rather, my works gradually evolve in an intuitive and dynamic process. I often contrast thick paint against thin. I might scratch deep into the paint or drag it across the canvas to create blurry rainbows of colour.
The initial shapes, brush strokes and visual rhythm on the canvas are interwoven, overlap or come together in a new way and determine the direction the painting process has to go until a harmonious, coherent painting emerges. My work is joyful and expressive, inspired by time spent outdoors with nature, or moments spent in different cultures and people.
