"Necropolis" is a cross-sectional painting of a stalled construction project in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Like the painting "Knossos," the vacated lot is represented like an archaelogical excavation. This impression is reminiscient of the "picturesque" depictions that 19th cenutury European travellers made of Mediterranean or Middle-Eastern ruins, often projecting their own Orientalist fantasties on to these foreign histories. Similarly, the phenomenon of middle-class gentrification imposes its own romanticized vision on to the urban landscape. This painting was originally exhibited at the BRIC Brooklyn Biennial in 2016 and "Stratigraphies" at Steven Amedee gallery in 2017. It now hangs in the Ned Hotel in New York City.

Adrian Coleman (b. 1984) is a British-born American painter who has recently returned to New York after living for four years in London. His work concerns urban disjunction, hybrid geopraphies, and the paradox of the immigrant experience. His use of watercolor refers to the "Picturesque" tradition, although his landscapes are gritty and dislocated rather than idyllic. Coleman is a winner of the 2012 Brooklyn Museum GO Open Studio Competition. He appeared in the Bronx Museum's 2015 Biennial and BRIC's 2016 Brooklyn Biennial. In 2017, Steven Amedee Gallery in Manhattan presented a solo exhibition of his work. In London, Coleman has participated in group exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, Peckham Levels, and the Willis Museum. In 2020, Adrian was awarded the Hopper Prize. In 2021, his show “Citizens of Nowhere” appeared at Taymour Grahne projects in London.
