"pH 3" Oil stick, paint on primed gator board, 48" h x 32" w x 0.5" d, 2020 web view: https://www.ralphpaquin.com/litmus-ii This highly original and creative series is part of an ongoing interest by Paquin to visually connect things that relate to each other in ways that are not apparent or easily seen. "I am at a point in my artistic experience that specific reasonings do not drive my work. The rational behind my work is complicated, construed and most times, improvised". More specifically in this series, Paquin's ideas appear as layered scientific iconography sandwiched in between biological imageries and laboratory processes. This colorful series is drawn and painted with care and precision giving nods to both Op Art and Conceptual Art movements. This series was intended to be sold as a set of six, but will be offered for sale as individual artworks. Artist Statement - 2023 Cause & Effect My creative processes is experimentally eclectic FIGURATIVISM. Mysticism strongly influences my ideas and abstracted forms while humor is often used to create a multifaceted metaphor. My approach to art is experimental yet well-crafted, intentional yet open. Early in life, I was propelled down a path to learn about human biology and genetics which has led me to the expanding influence regarding human origin. My interests in cosmology, belief systems, and archeology blend together with my life experiences to construct a pictorial encyclopedia that fuels my art and creativity. I use an extensive variety of materials and methods to fabricate original art forms arranged in thoughtful spaces. These processes range from “free form” sculpting to sophisticated multistep cold casting techniques. My sculptures are produced using a wide array of traditional and modern processes from materials that are efficient, unrestrictive, and durable. BIO Ralph Paquin is an American-born contemporary sculptor. He received a MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of the Arts, where he studied under world-renowned ceramicist Jun Kaneko. After Cranbrook, Paquin shifted into large-scale artworks conceptually based on the “human condition”. He has held large-scale installations at a number of venues including MIT, MediaLab, and Artist’s Space Gallery in NYC. Over the past 10 years Paquin has been researching new media and processes. His sculpture and works on paper moved dramatically toward anthropomorphically reduced forms and shapes. Paquin’s current series entitled “Genes & Chromosomes” is a meaningful play on genetics and includes organomorphic shapes made into essentialist forms. Paquin currently maintains a sculpture & drawing studio in South Carolina.
