About The Artwork
“Artsy Koople” was inspired from the Artist William H. Johnson and Gee's Bend Quilters. Johnson was an African-American artist best known for his paintings and prints of landscapes and portraits. Johnson evolved through several styles during his career, influenced by Impressionism, Chaïm Soutine, and naïve folk art. I love how he painted his character’s shoes. The quilts of Gee's Bend are quilts created by a group of women and their ancestors who live or have lived in the isolated African-American hamlet of Gee's Bend, Alabama along the Alabama River. I love their unique patchwork and sense of colors.
