About The Artwork
Initially begun as a piece about archaeological deposits and the cultural material left behind by humankind, the idea just wasn't coming together in collage format. I came across an ad for Ticonderoga pencils that depicted the strength of the lead in their pencils. I cut out the portion of the ad you see here, rotated it, and found that the scale of the hand fit perfectly with the scale of the landscape. It became a piece about the marks that we as humans make upon the landscape, and how land is treated as a commodity to be divided up for personal gains.
