Shown here is a selection of objects found, bartered or traded during my travels. Every object is a trinket made of sterling silver, and has an accompanying poem, written for it or around it. This on-going project of penning original poems based on found objects explores the idea of the gift economy, almost a century after anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski first discovered and described the Kula Ring, or Kula ceremonial exchange system, practiced by the Islanders. Individual trinkets shown here include a charioteer’s ring, Mexican wedding pendant, Metatron’s Cube, Teresa of Avila pocket shrine, and charms of Dali’s Christ, the Little Mermaid, the Trojan Horse, Noah’s ark, the Tortoise and the Hare, and Job in the belly of the whale. The individual poems comprise a larger book project, with each object sold as a collectible unto itself, scattered back into the world of trade and commerce, with the hope that one day, all the pieces may eventually reside with one owner, strung together like the Soulava necklace. Each trinket and poem may be purchased on its own at USD800.
