About The Artwork

Materials used include paper and card. Fashion and models featured are mentioned by name in advertorial pieces. This advert was for the fashion company Guess and the idea of taking the identity away of the models by covering their eyes, and changing the complete context and background of the advert was the idea. Completely changing the meaning of the original advert. The eyes are the window of the soul but if they are removed (in this case the glare of the models taken away from the viewer) then you can no longer see the energy and emotion being conveyed. The pose of the models, the male with his arm draping the waist of the female model gave the appearance of a sophisticated couple going out. The idea of a couple going out to a dinner party gave rise to the name of the piece "Guess whose coming to dinner?". The question is emphasised by the stripe covering the eyes of the models. This brings into question the idea of identity and how we recognise people, is it only how they look? Or how they move, sound or even feel. The colours started off with a nautical feel and continued to grow into a lined piece. Each line is individually cut patiently and overlaid to create the pattern that covers the models. It is not only that they are unidentifiable but the new patterns and shapes divert the attention and also cover the original image making the figures fade into the background instead of being the fore.

Born and raised in London with a cultural mix of Ghanaian and Indian parentage Sarah grew up in the Bohemian area of Notting Hill often visiting Portobello Road Market for clothes and fruit and vegetables. She has always enjoyed art and fashion and will spend hours in galleries. Sarah finds creating her pieces peaceful and is always looking out for inspiration in shapes, images and colours. Previously having ran a stall in Portobello Road Market selling women's accessories and once working in the field of health and social care specifically with Learning Disabilities and Mental Health. These experiences have helped shape the work she completes and her view of the world. Making art accessible and enjoyable for everyone is of the utmost importance to Sarah as an Artist. Her work seeks to be bold and enjoy the use of colour. All works are carried out by hand, every shape and line is cut individually. There is perfection in imperfection. Sarah enjoys travelling and has gained the most inspiration for her work in Cuba, Ghana and India. Sarah has been part of The Holy Art Gallery's "Future Stars" exhibition, "Art on Loop - Milan" exhibition and their online "Unusual" exhibition. She also contributed to the online exhibition "Man" with the Barbagelata Contemporary Art Foundation. Sarah took part in Art Number 23 Gallery's "Open Art" exhibition in Barcelona, Spain. She exhibited with Untitled Gallery in London from 30th November 2023 to 9th January 2024 at the O2 Centre in London. She also has exhibited with Cylinder Gallery at their "Pulse" exhibition in Somerset House in November 2023. In December 2023 she exhibited at the Art Maze ExhibitHere exhibition held at Bargehouse, OXO Tower Wharf. She exhibited with Artspace Innovations in New York in March 2024. She will participate in The Holy Art's virtual exhibition from 22nd April to 22nd May 2024. Sarah will next be in the Untitled Artists Fair in July 2024 in Chelsea. Exciting news! Sarah will be selling her work printed on homeware items along with exclusive collage gift bags in Portobello Road Market from early May 2024. She is always thankful for opportunities to bring her work to a larger audience.
