About The Artwork

HELEN OF TROY Helen of Troy or Helen of Sparta, was the daughter of Zeus and was said to be the most beautiful woman in ancient Greece. She had many suitors (the number of them is in question as is most of what we know about her) but in the end she chose, Menelaus the king of Sparta. Or was she delivered to him in a shrewd political move by her Father? Paris a prince of Troy was in turn promised Helen if he chose Aphrodite as the most beautiful of all the Goddesses, in a contest set up by Helen's Dad, Zeus. Even a Goddess needs to grease the wheels every once in a while, in order to get what she wants. Paris (having chosen wisely to gather the object of his desire) snuck into Sparta and abducted Helen and returned with her to Troy. Unless she went willingly as Menelaus was old, Paris young and handsome, and it was Spartan in Sparta. This of course ticked off Menelaus and he started a war with Troy to get her back. She was the face that launched a thousand ships, although I suspect the rest of her was equally inspired. The war drug on for ten years but in the end (with the help of a horse and the Goddesses he did not choose in the contest) the Greeks prevailed. Helen of Troy is also the name of a troubled album by John Cale, the classically trained father of Punk, and a member of the Velvet Underground. In the end whether Helen is real or not is of little matter as she has always been a really good excuse for Artists to do paintings of beautiful nude women. Surreallascapes: Each Collage is made up of at least 40 different pictures arranged in a landscape where the physical world is real, but the essence is of an alternate dimension. Or a Jigsaw puzzle where the pieces are made to fit together in a dreamlike manner. This will be offered as a signed and numbered print, limited to an edition of 25. Made from 100% rag paper, the 18" X 25" prints include a one-inch border.
