About The Artwork

LAST YEAR AT STALINGRAD "Last Year at Marienbad", is a 1961 film by Alain Resnais. A surrealistic encounter of a Man and Woman and possibly her Husband, set in an opulent Hotel with a large park in front, it concerns their chance meeting (or maybe not) the year before at Marienbad. What is actually going on in the movie is intentionally left to the viewers imagination. The movement of the camera, the deliberately bizarre editing; along with shifts in time and continuity, give the film a dream like nature. Still love it or loathe it, it’s a very influential (if a trifle slow) work of cinema. Stalingrad was the epic battle on the Eastern Front in the U.S.S.R. in 1942-43 between the Russians and the Nazis. The Germans wanted the oil of the Caucasus Mountains, in order to fuel their Panzer Divisions and the Nazis felt Stalingrad’s elimination was needed, in order to give them a clear path to the petrol. By far the largest battle set in an urban setting, the Russians tenacity, harsh Winters, as well as Hitler’s increasing psychosis, broke the back of the Wehrmacht. Thus, causing the destruction and surrender of the 6th Army (close to a quarter of a million men), and the retreat by the Nazis towards Germany and ultimate defeat. Stalingrad has since been renamed Volgograd. Surreallascapes: Each Collage is made up of at least 40 different pictures arranged in a landscape where the physical world is real, but the essence is of an alternate dimension. Or a Jigsaw puzzle where the pieces are made to fit together in a dreamlike manner. This will be offered as a signed and numbered print, limited to an edition of 25. Made from 100% rag paper, the 18" X 25" prints include a one-inch border.
