The human condition and its conundrums always inspire me. Here I depict a turbulent state of mind in a simultaneously baroque and minimal, delicate and visceral, and charged and tranquil way. A bedroom, the intimate architectural space of sleep and intimacy, is a metaphor for our psychological and subconscious realms. A surrealist, hefty, and unruly cloud formation disrupts its tranquillity, evoking anxiety, loneliness, and longing. Tinted with red, the colour contrast of the fluffy cloud combines two states of being: calmness and torment. This piece was longlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2023 and features on the front cover of the Prize's exhibition catalogue. Prints in museum quality paper are available.

The crux of my practice is to visually investigate the human condition and its conundrums: sculpted body parts and internal organs function as powerful signifiers for different psychological, emotional, and physical afflictions. I explore the vastly complex notion of beauty – both aesthetically and conceptually – by combining a wealth of materials and techniques, most often body casting, glass, and drawing. A strong sense of the relationship between what can potentially be described as beautiful and the brutality of existence is thus deeply infused in my work. Cohesion between form and idea is consciously pursued or challenged and charges my work with affecting connotations: as multiple layers of meaning unfold, the contingency of visual dialogues between crafted matter, abstract concepts, and ontological preoccupations crystallise.
