About The Artwork

This image was inspired by a visit to Andalucia in Southern Spain. A Spanish-looking couple hold the foreground, touching each other`s face tenderly. In the background are signs of war - a woman being ravished/ravaged (raped?) by a soldier on the right of the painting, with a landscape behind them that appears to be ravished/ravaged in turn by war. To the left, a line of three soldiers fire what looks like a three-gun salute as their erect penises also stand to attention. The soldiers' uniforms appear to be those of Napoleon's army - an invading army like that of the French during the Peninsular War in Spain in the early 19th Century. Goya recorded unflinchingly the horrors of this invasion in his series of etchings, 'The Disasters Of War'. My trilogy (so far) of 'Civil War' is a nod in his direction - here juxtaposing rape, pillage and invasion - i.e., cruelty - with love and tenderness. Within the cauldron of war these uncontained passions are heightened. Humanity hangs by a fine and easily-broken thread. In my series, 'Civil War' refers not only to a nation at war with itself, but also as a metaphor for the individual at war with him/herself.

"Although I state that much of my work stems from the imagery thrown up by depression, I would say that it is also the imagery of unconscious connection.Indeed the two are irrevocably entwined. It is no accident that the appearance of animal symbols and the use of bodily products such as hair, urine and blood is also influenced by my former work as a veterinary surgeon. Some time spent in psychoanalysis has helped me to illuminate these connections to find a personal mythology, which I believe connects to a universal meaning of what it is to be human. The `otherness` of animals, their power, vulnerability, unselfconsciousness and instinctual drives, and their relationship with us, are potent symbols of qualities we also have - qualities which we struggle with in our attempts to remain in control of ourselves and our society. It is where these tensions meet that my work is situated." Studio: Sculpture Shed, Spike Island, 133, Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6UX. Tel: (0117) 929 2266; Email: michael.hayter@blueyonder.co.uk
